I felt pretty fancy this week when I was asked to guest write an article for truly my favorite news source, The Huffington Post. I decided to write about the portrayal of gay characters in the media as well as on my webseries, SUBMISSIONS ONLY. Writing this definitely took me back to my days at Michigan having to do some argumentative writing assignments. Luckily, the topic this time was one that I have a little first hand experience with.

An exciting day for the Keenan-Bolger family indeed! The brilliant show my sister starred in off-broadway, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, just announced that they have booked a theatre and are opening on Broadway this season. A few minutes later, NEWSIES, the show I'm going to be in this spring announced its cast list. I've got to say, I'm pretty darn proud on all accounts!

25) "Civilian" -- Wye Oak
A last minute addition to my list, Celia recommended this band last week and I'm in love. Eerie lyrics, "I keep my baby teeth in a bedside table with my jewelry," and folky instrumentation make this one to be noticed.

24) "Video Games" -- Lana Del Rey
One of the most contended and disputed artists of the year, Lana Del Rey has garnered attention from both sides. The hipster community is up in arms over her undeniably manufactured Hollywood image, and while she seems a strange face for indie rock, this song is undeniably haunting and beautiful.

23) "Michael Jackson" -- Das Racist
This hilarious stream of consciousness verse and infectious beat made this song one of our most blasted in the dressing room at Papermill. Best enjoyed while shake weighting at intermission. #truth

22) "Stay Young, Go Dancing" -- Death Cab for Cutie
The release of this song coincided with my arrival to Seattle, the hometown of Death Cab, and whenever played is always surrounded with good memories.

21) "We Will All Be Changed" -- Seryn
I'm obsessed with the rich and creative vocal arrangement/harmonies on this track.

20) "The Honest Truth" -- Typhoon
There's supposedly an astonishing 17 musicians and singers performing "The Honest Truth" on Typhoon's album. Unsurprisingly, the end result is a spirited, boldfaced, communal sound. Loved it upon first listen and not sick of it 50 times later.

19) "Tree By The River" -- Iron & Wine
Iron and Wine's "Kiss Each Other Clean" was the first great album of the year. Often times artists evolve and lose what made us love them in the first place but Iron & Wine is the perfect example of how to expand your sound without losing your voice.

18) "Don't Stop" -- The Dodos
"No Color" is probably my favorite of The Dodos's recent albums. Their musicianship is unparalleled and nimble guitar playing, particularly on this cut, is pretty much mind blowing.

17) "You Know What I Mean" -- Cults
I love the 60's girl group throw back sound of The Cults hip new release. This is the song featured during Courtney Reed's infamous popsicle eating scene on my 4th of July Blog.

16) "Sometimes It Happens" -- Wilco
A bonus track off of their newest release, this song deftly explores the ebb and flow of friendships and relationships. Listening to this song this fall, I found myself getting kind of sad about the friends I've lost contact with.

15) "Wonderful (The Way I Feel)" -- My Morning Jacket
A heartfelt ballad that is a refreshing detour from My Morning Jacket's rock blasting sound. "Wonderful" is truly gorgeous.

14) "Time Spent In Los Angeles" -- Dawes
For the most part I quite enjoyed my time spent in Los Angeles, though I have to say Dawes perfectly captures "that special kind of sadness" that anyone who's spent time on the West Coast has felt. . . Sitting in your apartment alone. . . Waiting for your agents to call. . . Stuck in traffic on the 405. Yup. Folk lyric writing at its finest.

13) "Mamma Knows Best" -- Jessie J
Anyone who knows me knows I have a special weakness for Jessie J. I've followed this girl for 3 years on her quest to make it big in the music industry and despite a lot of criticism for the incredibly accessible pop music, I'm sorry, but there is no denying that she has one of the most spectacular voices in the music world. This track marked her American television debut when she appeared on SNL. Sexy, soulful and screemin', she made the world damn sure that Jessie J was not just another manufactured pop star.

12) "Sleep Forever" -- Portugal. The Man
Although its name implies some light listening, this Alaskan group's single is as rousing as any song this year.

11) "Made In America (feat. Frank Ocean)" -- Jay-Z & Kanye West
Probably the best rap album of the year belonged to the industry's two heaviest hitters. The album contained some surprisingly poignant turns. It was refreshing to see that this track also had a hook infectiously sung by newcomer, Frank Ocean (see. "Novacane"). At the end of the day don't we ALL want to know if our efforts are making ripples? That we've made it in America? #deepstuff #yo

10) "Fade and Then Return" -- William Fitzsimmons
I search for new music in many places--culture blogs, music magazines, record stores. Yeah, this is not the case when it comes to William Fitzsimmons's stunning tune. Earlier this year I was pointed towards an online NSFW art(sy) video series (see. Black Spark Films) in which this song was used as background music. Yep. I may have Shazamed a porn to find out the artist's name. Glad I did.

9) "Super Bass" -- Nicki Minaj
Probably my favorite pop tune of the year. I adore Nicki Minaj's schizophrenic rap personality and infectiously naughty hooks. It should also be noted that I could recite this entire song verbatim months before those two little girls on Ellen could. They've got me beat on "cute" though.

8) "Down In the Valley" -- The Head and the Heart
I discovered this band in the local section of a record store in Seattle. Confident and melodic, "Down in the Valley" really is folk-pop at its best. Look for these guys to become a standard among new American artists.

7) "We Are Young (feat. Janelle Monáe)" -- fun.
I heard this song the day it was released and was sure it would become the official indie theme song for my NEWSIES cast. Of course, GLEE used it a few weeks later and I lost ALL street cred for having found such a great tune. While it's sad that most people know the GLEE cast version rather than the fiercely sung fun. & Janelle one, I applaud them on breaking through with such a mega-hit.

6) "We Don't Eat" -- James Vincent McMorrow
The most heart-achingly beautiful song of the year came as a recommendation from my dear friend, Angela. Ireland hasn't put out a singer/songwriter this vocally arresting since Damien Rice.

5) "This Is Why We Fight" -- The Decemberists
A true anthem for the underdog! It seems no co-incidence that "This Is Why We Fight" was released in a year that brought such powerful memes and movements such as The Egpytian Riots, THE HUNGER GAMES, Occupy Wall Street and um....NEWSIES :P If you're not inspired to take up a cause after this tuner, you're probably not paying attention.

4) "Losers" -- The Belle Brigade
I'm realizing that many of the songs in my top 10 are anthems of sorts. Well this is no departure. "Losers" is a powerful melodic tuner about rejecting the social norms placed on our backs. It's impossible not to bob your head to it. I also love that it's a brother and sister duo. They've got such an intense blend that it's hard to tell where one voice stops and the other begins.

3) "Gangsta" -- tUnE-yArDs
By far my favorite new artist of the year is Merril Garbus (AKA tUnE-yArDs). I wouldn't be surprised if she tops more "album of the year" lists than any other singer this December. She is kooky, creative, original and a hell of a singer. tUnE-yArDs is a smorgasbord of sounds stacked and looped on top of each other. Her voice sits somewhere strangely between Tom Waits and Mariah Carey and everywhere in between. This song seems a great pick for her best track, but nearly every song on her album is wacky perfection.

2) "Holocene" -- Bon Iver
When Bon Iver announced his first major release, I was a mixed bag of nervous excitement and anticipation. His previous indie release, "For Emma, Forever Ago" is, in my opinion, one of the best albums of this decade so expectations were naturally pretty high. Thankfully, he has delivered a collection of songs so mesmerizing that they've met not only critical acclaim, but commercial success (see. Grammy nominations, 2011). While nothing on the album can quite surpass the beauty of "Re: Stacks" from his first album, "Holocene" with its lyrical depth, brilliant orchestrations, and ear-pleasing vocals is pretty darn close.

1) "Helplessness Blues" -- Fleet Foxes
Once in a great while a song will stop you dead in your tracks and force you to examine your life and your role on this earth. For me, "Helplessness Blues" was that song. An instant classic, this song became the yardstick to which I measured every other song this year. At five minutes, this song does what music is meant to do--make you feel and experience an idea in a way that could not be expressed in any other medium. Perfection.

Gavin Creel "Noise" An Anthem For Equality

I'm so proud to present the music video I recently directed for Gavin Creel! I was so shaken the first time I heard Gavin & Robbie play "Noise" and utterly thrilled when they asked me to be a part of their campaign for change. Although there have been many gay-themed anthems out there, I find this one to be the most direct and unapologetic in its approach. It's a call to arms for both the gay community and its many supporters to stop living passively and BE the change we wish to see. I truly hope that this will inspire action within country where the majority of gay people are treated as second-class citizens and denied equal rights. What Makes Broadway Special

Given the current range of shows starring on Broadway, it's a shame that more people can't tune in by some means such as cable TV or the Internet. This has always been one of Broadway's best and worst features. Its limitations of being in a single city and on a single stage keep it special in the sense that only so many people get to witness some of the best shows on the planet. However, this is also, obviously, a bit unfortunate, as so many millions of people are missing out on these stunning performances. However, this issue has come into sharper focus in the past season particularly for fans of the hit comedy central animated series South Park.

South Park is, and has for years now been one of TV's most popular shows, to the point that those who follow it often do so almost religiously. As a result of this, many of these fans are actually also fans of Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who created the show and have also had a number of other creative endeavors over the years (such as the movies BASEketball and Team America: World Police). In fact, despite their tendency to be rather inappropriate and offensive, it is almost difficult not to be drawn to the satirical genius of these two men if you ever give their shows or movies a shot. However, many of their biggest fans have been frustrated over the course of the last six months, because Matt and Trey now have a hit Broadway musical‚ The Book Of Mormon‚ which a lot of people are unable to see.

The Book Of Mormon has been described as everything from the surprise hit of the year to the best Broadway musical of the last twenty-five years, and backed up its critical acclaim by practically sweeping this year's Tony Awards. Its audiences are said to constantly shake and scream in laughter, and its shows are sold out months in advance. Indeed, it is beginning to seem as if anything Matt Stone and Trey Parker touch turns to gold, as they consistently inject their creative projects with their surprisingly clever, socially relevant, and undeniably hilarious touch.

The interesting thing is that this runaway hit has occurred in a single theater, where the adoring masses of South Park fans cannot always venture. It seems that at least to some extent, Matt and Trey are hitting a new audience with their comic genius. However, as wonderful as this is for them and for Broadway, it also illustrates the good-and-bad limiting nature of Broadway. On the one hand, the show's exclusivity is frustrating for a number of fans who have difficulty finding the time or means to see it. However, its limited availability also makes it that much more special.

First Look at ALADDIN

Hey guys! Here's a first look at one of the new songs from Aladdin, "Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim." The song happens early on in the show introducing the ragtag band of street musicians who narrate the show. It's a song originally crafted for the movie version and added back into the new production. We were asked to make a travel video about San Francisco and so we put our own campy twist on it. It's definitely not so much about travel as it is about us being campy and ridiculous in front of random locals. Last week I had the privilege of checking out a rehearsal of the exciting new play PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, opening soon at New York Theatre Workshop. It's a show that I've heard people praise as being one of the most entertaining and ingenious works in recent memory, but when asked what the show's like, I keep getting the response--It's unlike anything, you need to see it to believe it. Well I got to peak in on one of their staging rehearsals and chat with some of the actors (my amazing sister, Celia being one of them). I'm so excited to see the final product and hope you guys get to check it out as well!

Best Songs of 2010

While 2010 was a rather bland year for movies, the music industry was anything but. Some of the most exciting artists, both new and old produced some of the most remarkable albums in recent memory. I downloaded 15 gigabytes of new music this year, roughly 2,000 songs. From these I've chosen my 25 favorites. I hope you see a few of your personal favs on the list and download and enjoy some ones you may have missed.

1) "Good Intentions Paving Co." -- Joanna Newsom
A truly hard decision, but I think the #1 song of the year has to go to Joanna Newsom's enrapturing seven-minute masterpiece. Few artists can pull off a song of this length but Newsom's imaginative arrangements and lyrics paired with her unique and expressive vocals make this my favorite song of the year.

2) "Who Knows Who Cares" -- Local Natives
I've made it no secret that Local Native's joyous debut album Gorilla Manor is my favorite album of the year. A harder task is to choose my favorite cut. This track exemplifies their sound; a spoonful of Grizzly Bear, a pinch of Sufjan and yes, even a dash of Broadway.

3) "Tightrope (feat. Big Boi) -- Janelle Monae
In my opinion, the pop song of the year. Fresh and soulful Janelle Monae delivers a record with thorwback pangs of funk and motown yet feels entirely new and relevant. Be sure to check out the rest of the album too. The ArchAndroid is pretty much flawless.

4) "Relief (R. Kelly Cover) -- Sam Amidon
One of the most transformative covers I've ever heard. Sam Amidon has taken R. Kelly's deceptively poignant hit and turned it into an acoustic folk classic.

5) "Shark in the Water" -- V V Brown
I'm still shocked this song did not turn into the ubiquitous pop hit it deserves to be. With it's earworm hookiness and throwback pop flavor, it was a standard for car drives around LA.

6) "Crown on the Ground" -- Sleigh Bells
Noisy, messy, screechy cacophony. Words I'd rarely use to describe a song I'm obsessed with, but Sleigh Bells have an inexplicable raw charm. It was also my phone ring for most of the year.

7) "Excuses" -- The Morning Benders
Beautifully orchestrated and instantly gratifying. I was immediately in love with the harmonies and instrumentation of this song.

8) "Heartbreaker" -- Girls
Girls gave us one of the best debut albums of 2009 so I was thrilled when they delivered a 6 song EP this past month. Effortless and retro, these San Francisco natives write songs that belong on a beach blanket.

9) "You Oughta Know" -- Das Racist
I discovered this oft hilarious Brooklyn rap duo the same week I taught myself to skateboard. You could say this song is forever associated with falling on my ass in parking lots. I always recommend their (free!) mixtapes to any of my friends who claim to hate rap music. I have never once gotten a bad review.

10) "Dancing On My Own" -- Robyn
A hell of a comeback! I totally didn't realize that this was the same Robyn who graced the halls of my middle school until I was already completely obsessed with Body Talk Part 1. My first and favorite track off her trilogy albums.

11) "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" -- Arcade Fire
Probably the most hyped alternative album of the year. It took more than a few listens before I realized density of success that is The Suburbs. This track sums up the experience perfectly.

12) "Tighten Up" -- The Black Keys
I have a feeling this song will make it onto more Top 10 lists this year than any other song in this post. Listen to it once and it's not hard to understand why.

13) "Little Lion Man" -- Mumford & Sons
The genre of this song is more bluegrass than anything else, but it's Mumford's voice which evokes a mix of Damien Rice and Glen Hansard that makes it right up my alley.

14) "F*** You" -- Cee-Lo Green
Viral internet phenomenon turned pop hit, there's certainly no song this year that had more people talking. Hilarious lyrics, soulful vocals and a 60's pastiche arrangement had me bouncing down 9th avenue with a smile on my face for at least a month.

15) "Monster (feat. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj)" -- Kanye West
Probably the best reviewed and lauded album of the year, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has loads of perfect tracks but Nicki Minaj's angry, schizophrenic verse pushes this one slightly ahead of the pack.

16) "Cousins" -- Vampire Weekend
Exciting sophomore album, this was the first great single of 2010.

17) "Little Secrets" -- Passion Pit
I'm beguiled by frontman, Michael Angelakos's unique screamy falsetto. This track is catchy and thrillingly mixed.

18) "Free Translator" -- The Books
My friend Dani texted me this year saying, "Um, that Books song that you gave me is NAILING it while I'm walking around on this fall day." Yup.

19) "I Am Not a Robot" -- Marina And The Diamonds
Another artist I'm shocked didn't hit it huge this year. Especially with the absence of a new Regina Spektor album in 2010, Marina is an excellent stand-in for the fierce, mixy, singer-songwriter chick slot.

20) "10 Miles Stereo" -- Beach House
I stumbled upon this track rather late (2 days ago). I had already chosen my top 25 songs but upon first listen had to do some creative shuffling to secure this as a memorable and important song of the year.

21) "In the Sun" -- She & Him
If I only had one word to describe this song and subsequent album it would be "adorable." Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward team up for sweet and successful follow up to 2008's "Volume One."

22) "Never Gonna Leave Me" -- Sia
The perfect party music. Sia's "Never Gonna Leave Me" is catchy, fun goodness.

23) "Walking Far From Home" -- Iron & Wine
Drastically different in sound from their previous albums, Iron & Wine's track off their new EP is slightly more brash but retains the lyricism and humability of their earlier work.

24) "Beach Comber" -- Real Estate
It should come as no surprise that I became obsessed with this song while lying on the beaches of Los Angeles. It's also featured in my Andrew's Blog The Streamy's One video.

25) "All Delighted People" -- Sufjan Stevens
I probably will have to join the minority of people who were a little disappointed with Sufjan's AGE OF ADZ. While totally ambitious, I missed my old Sufjan. Luckily he gave us a surprise delivery of an EP in which the title track reminds me why he is still my favorite Indie artist.

Yet with THE BATTERY'S DOWN crew, we're pretty sure what Wendy's stumbled on is a solid gold pop hit! 7-year-olds performing RENT????

Well this is sure to cause a stir! I've heard of controversy over high school productions of RENT but an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL production, now that's something! While I was a little comfortable and verrrry giggly watching this video, I really thought about it and I guess I don't have a problem with kids performing such heavy material. I'm assuming the drug and sex references were lifted out of this version and while matters like AIDS and homosexuality are often viewed as provocative, I don't think it's wrong to expose kids to such themes. Have we arrived at a time where drag queens and lesbians can be considered the norm alongside orphans and princesses? I'm not sure I can quite answer that, but there's no doubt about it, these pint sized rockers definitely look like they're having fun. What do you guys think?

Jessica Hershberg improvs a song about "Soy Milk"

Um, my mind has actually been a little bit blown. In a concert for THE BATTERY'S DOWN Jess Hershberg decided not to sing a standard, but to take suggestions from the audience and completely improvise a song. This would truly be my worst nightmare, yet she somehow comes up with a fun, clever tune and pretty much sings the hell out of it. There must be synapses in my brain that are just not connected to have this kind of skill so MAJOR hats off to you Jessica.

SICK new singer!

Trust me, it takes a LOT for me to post a video of someone singing "Deying Gravity," a teenager no less, but I had to share this. Emily Kay Shrader is far from a new thing on youtube, her account already has 800 subscribers and she has 42 uploads but I hadn't heard of her until this morning. I'm pretty much fascinated. Gorgeous, seamless voice with a hell of a lot of power for someone her age (Emily is 18). Check it out and sub her channel!
